OSHKOSH 1997: A look

From our special correspondant Jaime Sada

Oshkosh is, together with the Sun'n'Fun, the largest ultralight event in the USA (and probably in the world).

You will find here some of the ULs our correspondant liked and his comments.

Fabulous AirCam 914. This plane, first created for aerial observation and motion picture, is one of the medias' favorites. Weighting 600 to 700 kg at full load, it provides a 600 kg thrust. Takes-off in 3 to 4 bodylengths. This caracteristics allow to fly with a cameraman holding a full-size motion picture camera, with an excellent visibility. Can as well fly at full load on a single engine. Although it cannot be classified as ultralight, its concept direcly derivates from the UL industry.

HKS 700 E on a Flightstar. We had reported on the arrival of the HKS 700 E motor, here on a Flightstar. As flown here, it seems less noisy than the 582 Rotax, with equal performances.

Quicksilver 912. This Quicksilver, as modified by Light Mississippi Aircraft, has wing struts instead of wires. An interesting UL for about US$ 30'000.

Team Airbike. The sky bike, US version: simple and efficient. The ideal choice for lovers of open air cockpits.

Oddysey. All metal ultralight, staggered seats for a better confort, excellent visibility. With a Rotax 503 et 2 on board, flies at 160 km/h, for a cruise speed of 120-140 km/h.

Aerolite 103. With an excellent manufacturing quality an at an attractive price, this one attracted number of visitors.

SB Drifter. Coming from Australia, certified in this country, and powered by a very quiet Jabiru motor. Takes-off and lands at 38-40 mph.

Thunder Mustang. Well, this is not an ultralight, but this all composite Mustang copy is powered by 640 HP V8 motor, flies at cruise speed 360 mph, dives at above 500 mph (more than 800 km/h !). Our correspondent said that you need a lifetime to spare the money, and another one to build it. A dream ! Was the biggest attraction of the show.
