AERO 97 - MID-WEST ENGINES
Mid West Engines is presently the only company in the world to have been able to certify a rotative motor under JAR-E full public transportation. Rotative motors, presently seldom used on ultralights, are still suffering of their lack of reliability and excessive fuel consumption back in the 70's. In the meantime, a lot of improvments have been made in these areas during the past 20 years. For ultralights, that kind of motor would bring a number of advantages: few moving parts, compactness, light weight, 1'000 hours TBO. Within Aero 97, Mid West had the injection bi-rotor AE110 Flytronic version on first show.
AE110 Flytronic:
This is a rotative bi-rotor 588 cc motor, with mixed cooling: water for internal parts, forced air for the core, with direct lubrication of main bearings and rotor tips. The direct injection, with automatic altitude compensation, allow to reach a 75 kW / 105 HP power at 7'500 rpm. Fuel can be 100 LL or unleaded 92. The nacked motor weights 54 kg, or 67.8 kg fully equiped. One of the characteristics of these rotary motors is to offer a flat propeller power curve, from 5'300 (45 kW) to 7'500 rpm (80 kW). The final version should be available by the end of the summer, and tests have been conducted on Zenair, Avid, Kitfox, Europa and Angel CH-7. At the show, the final price was not known. |

GAE 100R:
Bi-rotor 588 cc, mixed cooling, 74 kW (100 HP) at 7500 rpm, naked weight 53 kg, but then 73.8 kg fully equiped. Costs GBP 7'900 for the "MWE certified" version, and GPB 8'250 for the JAR-E version (full public transportation).
GAE 50R:
Single rotor 294 cc, mixed cooling, 37.3 kW (50 HP) at 7500 rpm, naked weight 33 kg, and 39.3 kg fully equiped. More than 120 units sold. Price is GBP 5'200 for the "MWE certified" version, GPB 5'600 for the JAR-22 certified version.
